Understanding Villeneuve-Lembron castle

• The seigniorial estate of a great clerk of the realm. The castle was built to demonstrate the social ascension of Rigaud d’Aureille, bailiff of the Auvergne mountains, maître d’hôtel to four French kings (Louis XI, Charles VIII, Louis XII and François I), and ambassador to the courts of Europe. François I stopped off at the castle on 15 July 1533 on his way to Marseille for the wedding of the dauphin, the future Henri II, and Catherine de Medici.
